Maxima – wastewater treatment system, Malmö and surrounding area
Project description
Client: VA Syd
Project cost: Approximately 20 billion SEK
Time: Ongoing – 2034 (Moresco has participated since 2019)
The project
Southwest Skåne is growing, and the wastewater infrastructure has not kept up with the pace. To meet the challenges, VA Syd Maxima is developing a regional wastewater treatment system that will provide sustainable and robust wastewater treatment for Malmö, Lund, Burlöv and Lomma as well as parts of Staffanstorp and Svedala. The system includes, among other things, a new Sjölunda wastewater treatment plant in Malmö, new outlet pipes in Öresund, a sewage tunnel under Malmö and one from Lund. The expansion and modernization require major investments and advanced technology, and through collaboration, greater benefits are created at lower cost. Maxima is being implemented as a program with several implementation projects for the different parts of the facility, as well as a separate permit project that collectively manages the environmental permit for the entire program.
Our mission
Moresco has participated in the program since 2019 and contributes at several stages. In the feasibility study and in the development of the implementation plan for the Sjölunda wastewater treatment plant, we have carried out constructability assessments. We are responsible for the procurement of all contracts in the program, from the overall procurement strategy to the implementation of each individual procurement process, and support in the management of collaboration in the contract implementation. We have also designed documents for the application for an environmental permit and provide advice in the permit process. In addition, we contribute with project management support in various forms to the Nya Sjölunda and Tunnel projects.
Challenges
Maxima is characterized by complex technical interfaces and requires close coordination between several municipalities. Parts of the facility are built underground in dense urban areas, while the existing treatment plant is to remain in operation throughout the contract period. The long construction period and large project volumes also place high demands on sustainable and structured management.
